Malaria spreads through a mosquito bite (female anopheles) and the common causative organisms in India is plasmodium vivax and p falciparum (malaria parasite). Malaria caused by this parasite does not cause any permanent damage. It is characterized by fever every third day, followed by rigonr or shivering and accompanied by headache and muscle pain. In some cases, there may be enlargement of the liver and spleen. The final diagnosis can be made by examining the blood for the presence of the parasite. Lately a resistant strain of plasmodium vivax and p, falciparum has erupted in some areas of India. This has made the treatment more difficult since it is resistant to usual anti-malarial drugs. How Does the Disease Progress? The malarial parasite gets injected into the bloodstream by the bite of the female anopheles mosquito and reaches the liver where it multiplies. The baby parasites are released from the liver into the bloodstream, where they enter the red blood cells (RBCs) or return to the liver. Those which enter the RBCs, grow and further multiply. This leads to distension and bursting of RBCs and releasing the toxic metabolites of these multiplied parasites, resulting in rigour and fever. The released parasite may re-enter into other RBCs to repeat the cycle of growth and multliplication, causing another attack of rigonr and fever. This new cycle in RBCs takes about 48 hours and account for the occurrence of fever and rigour every third day. Those who enter the liver may be responsible for continuance of the disease; it takes about two weeks’ time to complete the multiplication cycle. The parasites can be attacked in the RBCs or in the liver. Drugs ChloroquineThis is the drug of choice for benign tertian malaria which is usually caused by plasmodium vivax. The oral dose is 600 mg twice of chloroquine (base), followed after 6 hours by 300 mg, then 150mg twise daily, for the next two days. The other drug of this group is amodiaquine. However, some stains of P. falciparum are resistant to chloroquine. In such a situation, quinine is given intravenously. Chloroquine may cause nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. It can be given during pregnancy.MefloquineIt is used for treating an acute attack and curing malaria due to resistant strains of parasites. It should be kept reserved for only these patients of malaria, since its misuse may result in the development of mefloquine-resistant strains of the parasites. It is taken in a single dose of 1.5g. Adverse Effects: Adverse effects of mefloquine are seen in about 1 % patients. These includes irritation in the stomach, fatigue, neurological symptoms in the form of headache, dizziness, visual disturbances, vertigo, tinnitus, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety psychosis, or seizures. Constipation and fecal impaction are not the same thing. Many people think that they are the same. While they both involve the intestines, bowels and fecal matter, they are two different problems that have to be treated differently.

Constipation is the term used to describe slow moving feces or stool through the intestines. The longer it takes for fecal matter to be eliminated from the body, the drier and harder it will become. Symptoms of constipation include passing small, dry hard stools, a feeling of incomplete evacuation, straining, fatigue, bad breath, skin eruptions, abdominal pain, hemorrhoids and irregular bowel movements.

Fecal impaction is the term used to describe a large mass of hard stool or fecal matter that is stuck in the rectum. Symptoms of fecal impaction may be similar to constipation symptoms. However, in addition to those symptoms the individual may have bladder problems, back pain, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, a distended abdomen, a rapid heartbeat, sweating, fever, dizziness and even high or low blood pressure. Individuals who have a fecal impaction may also experience very explosive diarrhea. This diarrhea does not remove the impaction, it moves around the impaction.

Constipation can be very uncomfortable and annoying. Fecal impaction is far more dangerous than constipation. Fecal impaction can be life threatening. Fecal impaction that is not treated can worsen and the individual could possibly die from it.

Constipation can be caused by numerous things including not eating enough fiber, not drinking enough liquids, a lack of exercise, certain medications, changes in lifestyle or routine, ignoring the urge to move your bowels, abusing laxatives, irritable bowel syndrome, pregnancy, traveling and other various reasons.

Fecal impaction can be caused by ignoring constipation, pain medications, illness and long term use of laxatives. Many people are surprised to learn that prolonged use of stimulant laxatives can lead to fecal impaction, but it is true. With prolonged use the colon can become dependent upon the laxative to aid it in evacuation. When the colon has been exposed to laxatives and stool softeners for a period of time and then it does not get the expected dose, constipation and fecal impaction can occur. To put it simply, prolonged laxative use can make your body forget how to move and evacuate fecal matter on its own.

If constipation is not addressed and an individual develops fecal impaction it cannot be treated as easily. Fecal impactions in the rectum must be removed manually by a medical professional.

Constipation should be addressed at its onset to prevent a fecal impaction. Steps to alleviate constipation can include making changes in the diet, drinking an adequate amount of water, exercising and doing a colon cleanse. Tips to aid in stool evacuation include the following:

When you are sitting on the toilet, it is important that you do not hold your breath when you are trying to eliminate a stool. A good constipation tip is to breathe in your nose and out through your mouth. Holding your breath while you are trying to pass a stool can actually hamper the elimination process because it closes up the bottom. Learn how to push without straining. When you have placed your feet on the stool, simply lean forward and breathe normally. This will enable your stomach muscles to push the stool out without straining. Essentially, you are pushing from your waist. You should always respond to any sign that your bowels want to move. Delaying or putting off a bowel movement can aggravate constipation. No matter where you are, if you feel like your bowels want to move, find a bathroom.

Dont let constipation get the better of you. Be proactive and take the necessary steps to keep you bodys digestive system in good health and running smooth.

I wanted to finish this week’s posts with another discussion of the glycemic index. I have written about it in the past but want to revisit it because it is so crucial to life long health and it’s so simple.

What is the glycemic indexThe glycemic index is a measure of how fast a food spikes your blood sugar after eating it. Foods that are high in simple sugars spike your blood sugar very fast. These include anything with high-fructose corn syrup, like soda or anything with simple sugars from white flour, like white bread and white rice. Foods that are high in complex carbohydrate and fiber raise your blood sugar slowly and gently. These include fruits, vegetables and whole grain products. Why should you care?What’s the big deal? Your body needs to maintain blood sugar in a very narrow range. If you spike your blood sugar too fast, it will over-react with a large release of insulin and cause your blood sugar to crash back down. This is why you feel very tired after a large, high-glycemic meal. The other problem is that this crash causes you to feel very hungry again because your body is trying to recover from the crash. This causes you to eat more than you need and gain weight. Have you ever felt hungry a couple hours after eating Chinese food? Well, this is why.

But the problem runs much deeper than getting tired and eating too much. After a while, your body will adjust so that you can no longer crash your blood sugar. It does this by becoming insensitive to it’s own insulin and you develop insulin resistance. What this means is that the cells in your body stop responding to insulin and stop taking up sugar out of the blood.

Insulin resistance happens first in the muscle cells, which actually need the most sugar-energy. The fat cells continue to respond and absorb most of your blood sugar. This causes increased fat storage and weight gain around the mid-section. Approximately 1 out of 4 adults in the United States are insulin resistant.

What can you do about it?If your behavior does not change, insulin resistance can progress to metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. This puts you at dramatically increased risk for heart disease and a lot of other health problems.

All of this is preventable and even reversible if you are already there. Switching to a low glycemic diet, getting more exercise, adequate sleep and taking quality nutritional supplements all help to reverse insulin resistance and get your body back on track to health.

Be sure that this is not just an adult problem. Feeding your kids high glycemic meals is setting them up for the same fate. Today, the Center for Disease control predicts that 1 out of 3 kids will become diabetic because of our diet and lack of exercise. Please don’t send your family down this road.

Ease the Discomfort of Heartburn and Indigestion Let’s Get Heartburn and Indigestion Under Control.

Have you ever jumped up in the night, awakened by a sudden and nauseous burning sensation in the center of your tummy? Maybe you indulged in some overly spicy chili, or overdid it on those late-night leftovers. Heartburn and indigestion can be very cruel.

These hasty heartburn and indigestion solutions will alleviate your fiery stomach and help you get back to sleep!

Initially what you’ll want to do when you’re awakened by heartburn and indigestion pain is to get out of bed and stand up. This helps keep the acid at bay while you go and get a full glass of cool water.

Slowly drink the glass of water, and then proceed to mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and half a glass of water. Be careful though, if you have high blood pressure or are pregnant, this can bring on water retention or increase your blood pressure. This will help relieve your heartburn and indigestion.

Particular foods can affect nighttime heartburn and indigestion. These foods like soda pop or beverages with caffeine (not too good before bed anyway!), alcohol, garlic, chocolate (sorry!), citrus fruits, tomatoes and tomato-based products are high on the list. Avoiding this mode of food can help alleviate your heartburn and indigestion, if you regularly find yourself awakened with that excruciating burning!

Eating a banana every day operates similar to an antacid to soothe heartburn. If you’re already stricken with indigestion, eating pineapple or papaya (or drinking the juice) can help mend your stomach as expected.

How does this one sound? Some people also claim that eating a teaspoon of mustard (yuck!) can work without delay. If you like mustard go for it.

Keep away from eating, at least two hours prior to laying down for bed. Those late night refreshments can attack your stomach all night and prevent you from falling into a deep, restful sleep. Sleeping on your left side or at a somewhat upright angle can keep acid down where it belongs. This will decrease your chances of getting heartburn and indigestion.

Another way to help yourself from heartburn and indigestion is to eat small, frequent meals and chew your food slowly and thoroughly. Allow two or three hours to digest before going to bed or lying down

If you are awakened by heartburn on a regular basis or the pain is severe, or if you have heartburn with vomiting, you’ll want to consult your doctor immediately as it may be a sign of a more serious condition such as an ulcer. Above all, avoid spicy, fatty and caffeine-containing foods before bed, and you should be able to drift off to sleep easily.

So if you exercise using the wrong form and techniques resulting in painful or even worse, permanent injuries, well, that is pain isnt it? So therefore with pain, there will be gains. Hmmm, such profound reasoning that even the great philosopher Confucius will be confused if he is still alive eh?

You dont need a fitness personal trainer because you pay your income taxes. So without someone to guide and train you scientifically, you will not lose much body and visceral fat, so you will still have that high blood pressure, that potential stroke and heart attack, so that you will eventually land in a government subsidized hospital and so that some of the taxes which you have paid will be utilized by yourself. That is great clever thinking eh? You are glad that even without a PHD in business studies, you can figure out how to get a wonderful return of investments from your taxes paid

You dont need a fitness personal trainer because you believe in conforming to the society. After all, most people in your country are overweight and not exactly glowing with good health, then why should you be otherwise? You are delighted to be like most people, obese and unhealthy. Hey, you are a good citizen arent you?

You eavesdrop on their trainers giving instructions and then you secretly work out according to what you have overheard not realizing that each and everyone is different and workout plans are to be tailored to each individual condition factoring in other issues like lifestyle, dietary habits and even the choice of exercises. You prefer to monkey see, monkey do and eventually falling painfully off the tree. Or should I say falling off the Empire State Building where the mighty King Kong fell?
