Managing stress is all about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule, your environment, and the way you deal with problems. The ultimate goal is a balanced life, with time for work, relationships, relaxation, and funand the flexibility to hold up under pressure and meet challenges head on.

                                       Stress Management Techniques

The simple realization that youre in control of your life is the foundation of stress management

Living with high levels of stress, can putt your entire health at risk. Stress wreaks havoc on your emotional stability, as well as your physical health. It tapers with your ability to think clearly, function effectively, and enjoy life.

Causes of Stress

Stress may be because of any physical, chemical, or emotional factors that cause bodily or mental unrest and that may even cause physical sickness. Stress also has effects on the immune system. Chronic (long-term) stress has the effect of wearing down the immune system, leading to an increased susceptibility to colds and other infections. Physical and chemical factors that can cause stress include trauma, infections, toxins, illnesses, and injuries of any sort. Emotional causes of stress and tension are numerous and varied.

How to Manage Stress

Stress is a daily part of our life; it would be absolutely foolish to think that we can eliminate it from our lives completely. What we can do is to manage it and not let it cripple us.

Learn to say no This is the most important step, know your limits and stick to them. Whether in your personal or professional life, refuse to accept extra responsibilities that you know will cause you distress.

Avoid people who stress you out If someone constantly causes stress in your life and you cant turn the relationship around, limit the amount of time you spend with that person or end the relationship entirely.

Take control of your environment Avoid environments that stress you, if traffics got you tense, take a longer but less-traveled route. If shopping is an unpleasant chore, do your grocery shopping online or ask someone to help out.

Avoid heated topics If you get upset over religion or politics, avoid talking about them. If you repeatedly argue about the same subject with the same people you are bound to be stressed.

Know your limits evaluate your schedule, responsibilities, and daily tasks. If youve got too much on your plate, drop tasks that arent truly necessary to the bottom or eliminate them entirely.

Express instead of bottling up- If something or someone is bothering you, communicate your concerns in an open and polite way. If you dont voice your feelings, resentment will build creating unnecessary stress.

Compromise- When you ask someone to change their actions, be willing to do the same. If you both are willing to bend a little, youll find a middle ground.

Be more assertive- If you need something ask for it. Deal with problems head on, doing your best to anticipate and prevent them.

Manage your time better- Poor time management can cause a lot of stress. When youre stretched too thin and running behind, its hard to stay calm and focused. But if you plan ahead, you can avoid these stress-inducing pitfalls.

Dont try to control the uncontrollable- Many things in life are beyond our control particularly the behavior of other people. Rather than stressing out over them, focus on the things you can control.

Look for the Brightside- When facing major challenges; try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth.

Share your feelings- Talk to a trusted friend or a therapist. Expressing what youre going through can be very therapeutic, even if theres nothing you can do to alter the stressful situation.

Learn to forgive- Let go of anger and resentments. Free yourself from negative energy by forgiving and moving on.

Include relaxation time-Include rest and relaxation in your daily schedule. Dont allow other obligations to encroach. This is your time to take a break from all responsibilities and recharge your batteries. Make time for leisure activities that bring you joy, whether it be stargazing, playing the piano, or working on your bike.

Create a Support system- A strong support system will buffer you from the negative effects of stress. Spend time with positive people who enhance your life

Exercise regularly. Physical activity plays a key role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress. Make time for at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times per week. Nothing beats aerobic exercise for releasing pent-up stress and tension.

Eat a healthy diet- Start your day right with breakfast, and keep your energy up and your mind clear with balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day.

Reduce caffeine and sugar- The temporary “highs” caffeine and sugar provide often end in with a crash in mood and energy. By reducing the amount of coffee, soft drinks, chocolate, and sugar snacks in your diet, youll feel more relaxed and youll sleep better.

Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs- alcohol or drugs may provide an easy escape from stress, but the relief is only temporary. Later the stress simply piles on plus your health starts to suffer.

Get enough sleep-Feeling tired will increase your stress because it may cause you to think irrationally.
From:http://print.articlesfactory.com/articles/fitness/stress-management-techniques.html

We are all aware of the conventional acne treatments following under two main categories: oral acne treatments like antioxidants and other acne-control pills, and rub-on acne treatments like creams and lotions. But did you know that there are some unconventional ways of curing acne as well? Let’s find out what these methods are and whether they are effective or not.

A method that is quickly gaining in popularity is laser acne treatment. It is a painful and expensive procedure which might not be suitable for all people. It is best to adopt laser treatment if you have an age-old acne problem along with scarring and also if you can afford it.

A thermal treatment for acne which can be applied at home is also an unconventional way for curing pimples. Take a hot wet towel dipped in boiling water and place it over affected areas or pimples one by one for about 2 to 3 minutes. This procedure helps to kill the bacteria and cure pimples without having to use any pills or topical creams and lotions. Although it’s an easy-to-follow method, it does not guarantee complete acne treatment.

Last but certainly not the least, a revolutionary product for the treatment of acne has been recently introduced to the market which is not like any of the traditional methods - the Zeno acne clearing device. This device uses thermal technology to get rid of pimples in a matter of hours. The device works well on pustules in their very early stage.

Zeno is good for those who want to get rid of pimples quickly. It is the fastest known acne treatment to date. However, it should be known that this device does not work very well for the treatment of blackheads and whiteheads. It’s a one-time investment product which will cure your pimples whenever they appear on the face or any other part of the body.

Meditation has been used since the dawn of time for a variety of different purposes and for anyone suffering from insomnia, or unable to sleep as the result of worry or stress, then daily meditation exercises can prove a powerful aid to sleep.

If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from insomnia then you could well benefit from a dose of daily meditation. Meditation and health have long been linked and for very good reason, as meditation is very strong medicine!

There are numerous types of meditation available nowadays and it is a good idea to try several different types of meditation before choosing the one which suits you best and which gives you the greatest benefit.

It is important however, before looking at meditation exercises, to understand that meditation is based upon the building blocks of visualization (or imagery), breathing exercises and relaxation exercises. So, if you are just starting out, you will find that you will get better results from your meditation if you begin with visualization, breathing and relaxation exercises. When you feel comfortable with these, then you will find that moving on to meditation will not only be easier, but will also be much more fruitful.

The secret is to make exercise part of your daily routine. You should try a number of different exercises until you find a couple that suit you and then add these to a daily routine.

Remember too that there is no right or wrong way to do visualization, breathing and relaxation exercises and you should adapt the exercises that you try to suit your own needs. Experiment with your own variations and discover what works best for you.

This said, there are several things that you can do so that you get the maximum out of your exercise routine. To help reduce distraction and increase relaxation, take the following steps before performing any exercise:

1. Remove restrictive or tight clothing.

2. Find somewhere quiet and, preferably, with a low light level. You may find that having some quiet music or some form of aromatherapy also helps.

3. Make sure that the room is at a comfortable temperature.

4. Make sure that you are sitting or lying comfortably. If you have problems getting comfortable, try using pillows for support.

Most importantly, keep in mind the fact that we all have different physical limitations and so, if at anytime you feel uncomfortable or experience any distress while performing your exercises, then stop immediately. Think about changes that you can make to the exercise that will help you to be more comfortable and then try again.

Finally, remember that there are no hard and fast rules and don’t be afraid to let your creative juices flow and find out just what works best for you.
From:http://print.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/meditation-and-health-a-recipe-for-better-sleep.html

About two decades ago it was thought that malaria had been eradicated from India. However, recently, there has been a resurgence of this disease.

Malaria spreads through a mosquito bite (female anopheles) and the common causative organisms in India is plasmodium vivax and p falciparum (malaria parasite). Malaria caused by this parasite does not cause any permanent damage. It is characterized by fever every third day, followed by rigonr or shivering and accompanied by headache and muscle pain. In some cases, there may be enlargement of the liver and spleen. The final diagnosis can be made by examining the blood for the presence of the parasite. Lately a resistant strain of plasmodium vivax and p, falciparum has erupted in some areas of India. This has made the treatment more difficult since it is resistant to usual anti-malarial drugs. How Does the Disease Progress? The malarial parasite gets injected into the bloodstream by the bite of the female anopheles mosquito and reaches the liver where it multiplies. The baby parasites are released from the liver into the bloodstream, where they enter the red blood cells (RBCs) or return to the liver. Those which enter the RBCs, grow and further multiply. This leads to distension and bursting of RBCs and releasing the toxic metabolites of these multiplied parasites, resulting in rigour and fever. The released parasite may re-enter into other RBCs to repeat the cycle of growth and multliplication, causing another attack of rigonr and fever. This new cycle in RBCs takes about 48 hours and account for the occurrence of fever and rigour every third day. Those who enter the liver may be responsible for continuance of the disease; it takes about two weeks’ time to complete the multiplication cycle. The parasites can be attacked in the RBCs or in the liver. Drugs ChloroquineThis is the drug of choice for benign tertian malaria which is usually caused by plasmodium vivax. The oral dose is 600 mg twice of chloroquine (base), followed after 6 hours by 300 mg, then 150mg twise daily, for the next two days. The other drug of this group is amodiaquine. However, some stains of P. falciparum are resistant to chloroquine. In such a situation, quinine is given intravenously. Chloroquine may cause nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. It can be given during pregnancy.MefloquineIt is used for treating an acute attack and curing malaria due to resistant strains of parasites. It should be kept reserved for only these patients of malaria, since its misuse may result in the development of mefloquine-resistant strains of the parasites. It is taken in a single dose of 1.5g. Adverse Effects: Adverse effects of mefloquine are seen in about 1 % patients. These includes irritation in the stomach, fatigue, neurological symptoms in the form of headache, dizziness, visual disturbances, vertigo, tinnitus, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety psychosis, or seizures. It can produce heart-rate irregularities when given along with digoxin, anti-depressants and propranolol.From:http://print.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/drugs-and-medicine-used-in-malaria.html

Looking for immediate relief for muscle cramp? Try this simple method and see if it works for you.

AromatherapyEase your aching, cramping muscles with a delightfully soothing rosemary lavender massage. To prepare the blend, combine 3 drops each of German chamomile, rosemary, and ginger; 8 drops of lavender; and a If ounce of almond or avocado oil. Massage the oil into the affected muscles after a relaxing, warm bath. For a different blend, try Roman chamomile, bay, peppermint, and safflower oils. Other beneficial oils include marjoram and clary sage.Ayurvedic MedicineIn Ayurveda, muscle cramping and spasms are caused by excess vata, which is increased by cold, too much exercise, or poor blood circulation. An Ayurvedic practitioner may suggest massaging the affected muscle with oil of shatavari to relax the muscle fibers. He also may encourage you to soak your feet in hot mustard tea.Bodywork and Somatic PradicesAcupressure and shiatsu are excellent modalities to address cramps.ChiropradicSpecific chiropractic adjustment (SCA) can be especially helpful in decreasing muscle cramps through active stimulation of the nerves supplying the muscles. Electro muscle stimulation and either moist heat or cold applications can decrease muscle cramps. (Moist heat application is typically used for chronic cramping; cold application, such as ice, is typically used for acute episodes.) The chiropractor may also perform or prescribe cross friction. A nutritional consult should be obtained in cases of chronic cramping. For example, patients Who perience chronic charley horses (cramping of the calf muscles) may be deficient in electrolytes.HydrotherapyTry one or more of the following treatments:Apply hot or cold packs to the affected muscle for 20 minutes several times daily, until symptoms subside.

Chiropractors: They’re on My Team!
by: Gordon Black

Whenever I see the title “men’s health”, it conjures up a couple of images in my mind, and as far as most of the articles I see on the subject, they fall into one of two distinct and very different categories. It’s either a sort of bodybuilding bust-your-buns biceps and washboard abs type deal with the fake tan and the body oil and the ubiquitous smile or it’s the serious senior, Alan Alda persona doctor advising on the necessity of enduring an examination with a latex glove and all the guilt you have to endure if you don’t.

Who needs to be reminded that there is something slowly going wrong with you inside and it’s your duty to identify it and do something about it? Hey, leave me alone, I’m feeling pretty good and who wants to rush to diagnosis? And as I said, the other extreme is the in-your-face body that only took thirty hours a week at the gym for the last three years and a basin-load of creatine to realise. I don’t think there is much point in writing about “pumping iron” workouts, when every gym in the land will counsel you on how to get those pecs bulging like they’re on steroids.

No, for me men’s health is sort of like the Cresta Run or the Luge at the Olympics, you hurtle down an icy slope flat on your back and try to steer clear of the sides; that’s the part that I think is like men’s health, try to steer clear of the sides and slip on through to the finish in one piece.

Anyway, here is my content part as opposed to my comment part: Chiropractors. They are a staple in my team to get through to the end and they can help you and me make it to the finish line in much better shape than we would without them. But, heavens, you would not believe the number of guys I run across complaining about some part of their body and how incapacitated they are and how they can’t do so many of the usual things and then, when I suggest that a chiropractor could fix that problem in about fifteen minutes flat, they shy away shaking their heads, “oh no my brother-in-law was screwed up by a chiro” or, “no I don’t trust them ” or simply, “no I’ve been through this before, it only lasts about four weeks”, hey, oh great, only four weeks!!

So I incorporate a regular chiropractic adjustment every five to six weeks into my schedule, just to keep my spine limber and supple and no I’m not going to him because I have a problem, but maybe that’s why I don’t have a problem. So with the medical professionals it’s sort of like having a team of specialists, each one taking care of a particular aspect of your overall health. And, seriously here, I genuinely feel that chiropractic care is a plus especially for anyone with athletic aspirations; these guys are not just for the sore backs, they can be a definite asset in your athletic arsenal. Funny thing is that if they deal mostly with athletes, I think they seem to call them Sports Kinesiologists; much more palatable to the athlete and sounds so much more “formula one” type stuff, right?

So consider getting yourself organized with a good chiropractor and see how it goes, I bet you will not believe the kinds of problems you might get solved by a chiropractic adjustment; again it’s not just about sore backs and slipped discs. I certainly put them high on my list, and when I may have overdone it a bit here and there, it does impart a certain amount of confidence knowing that there’s a pretty good chance that my chiropractor can respond to my slightly irreverent request, “OK, now put me back in the game, doc.” Some even have a sense of humour: I was complaining to mine the other day about getting older and he just said, rather wryly, “hey, the alternative is not so hot either!”

Body Building Supplements That Build Your Body
by: Clarence Carter

While majority of the population are tackling obesity, but you are one of those who is on lookout for gaining weight. Yes obesity is a health risk and but is the lean and thin body type a good thing? Health wise lean and thin is better than being obese but having a perfect body is still better than lean and thin body.

For that doing exercises and maintaining a healthy diet regimen can serve the purpose. But doing exercises alone would not help someone get the body he aspires for. To get that physical feature an individual also needs to have body building supplements and a protein rich dieting program.

Most of the food supplements are not main meals but some of them available today are meal replacement powders. More popular body muscle supplements have Protein, Calcium, Phosphorus, Chloride, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Micro-Lactin, vitamins and other nutrients as its major ingredients. These minerals are necessary to grow muscles or rejuvenate the affected muscles.

Body building supplements cannot help you gain a healthy body if you are not dieting and training correctly. These supplements give you the much needed nutrients quickly which helps in increasing strength and decreasing time to rejuvenate the muscles. Vitamins and amino acids help in minimising the side effects of weight training and speeds up the recovery process of the muscles.

How long can you go on having liquids, fruits and vegetables? There comes a time when you start carving for something else. To gain muscle one needs to have more than what a normal dietary habit can provide. Body building supplements are there to provide you a cheap solution for your nutritional need.

These body building supplements are safe and some offers free samples of their products and if the sample supplements work for you then you can buy it. Body building supplements are a craze in the US and UK amongst the people with lean and thin body type. An individuals body type can be differentiated into various types and genetic factor is the determinant factor which decides it. If your parents have small body frame it is certain that you too would have small body frame.

But before taking body grow supplements one should consult a weight trainer. He is right person to advise you on what kind of minerals are required by you to gain weight. He or she can decide your nutritional supplement when you provide him the correct information on your diet habit. Following a healthy diet habit coupled with exercises and body building supplement can get you the desired result.

So, leave your past behind and enjoy the healthy future ahead. But make sure that in an effort to gain weight you do not put on too much of it as too much of it would lead you to obesity. And obesity is a future health risk.

Direct action and new types of companies are already showing there is an alternative to the market.

Once upon a time progressive activists knew how to campaign on inequality and injustice in a global marketplace. There were clear stances to be taken; there was boycott, resistance and stand off; there were clear hopes for a different international economic order, opposed to one dominated by ‘the’ market. Campaigns were often aligned with national liberation struggles and bubbled with the ideals and potential of new states.

Now there is only the apparent inevitability of a direct engagement in the market and with the few, powerful market-makers. Governments have an ambiguous position: on the one hand we pressure them to regulate transnational companies (TNCs) for the wellbeing of the people; on the other hand they frequently support business in undermining such regulations. The effect of this shift has been a proliferation of policy initiatives for the governance of companies, the financial sector, of overseas development and the environment. Simple commercial and legal mechanisms such as labels have become tools for social and political agendas. Many new private- sector, NGO and trade union think tanks and ‘talking spaces’ such as the UK Ethical Trading Initiative have been launched. Many companies have signed up for working groups on monitoring and verification processes. Specialist ethical company associations, notably the enormous Businesses for Social Responsibility in the USA (which includes companies responsible for 20 per cent of the world’s total turnover, including Monsanto and Coca Cola) have been formed. There is also a new, still-evolving discipline in ethical and responsible business management. There are already graduate courses and degrees, dedicated institutes and academies, and (forthcoming) a government-backed new learning centre all derived from the need to deliver ethics and responsible supply chain management. There is also a growing number of direct agreements between Northern and Southern non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and TNCs. The big accountancy firms and SGS (Surveillance General De Securite) now offer to audit companies’ values and labour standards alongside other more conventional measures of profits and stocks.

As the Maquila Solidarity Network, based in Toronto, recently stated: Five years ago many of us dismissed codes of conduct as nothing more than company attempts to protect their brand image and/or avoid government regulation…In just a few years we have moved from company codes of conduct with no provision for monitoring or verification towards codes with elaborate systems of internal and external monitoring, factory and company certification and mechanisms for NGO and labour participation in monitoring and third party complaints procedures. Intuition and bitter experience are turning more and more people into activists. This has risen from action and argument against the market and its assumption of unassailable rights and an unaccountable sway over people’s lives and the planet’s resources. This new wave does bring to the fore some contradictions. For instance we now find trade unions ‘understanding’ why good companies like Levi’s must lay off thousands of workers; we have NGOs like Oxfam encouraging buycotts (lending their ethical ‘brand’ of approval to specific products or stores like Sainsburys), we have localists anxious to preserve and reinvent their community without heed to notions and benefits of interdependence; and there is a tier of the world’s population who are not currently engaged in the global economy and thus miss out on gains achieved through any negotiations via the formal economy. Further, we have popular alliances which aim to influence the behaviour of powerful companies but are financially and morally entwined with those very companies.
From:http://print.articlesfactory.com/articles/womens-issues/fairtrade-fortnight-special-shopping-for-a-better-world-part-1.html

In todays increasingly stressful world, the number of women suffering from hair loss is increasing. We all want to look our best and damage to a womans crowning glory can be a uniquely upsetting affliction.

I had known for years that Id have to confront my thinning hair problem at some stage. Having older sisters with various degrees of hair thinning led me to believe that Id follow suit sooner or later. I took some action after I noticed that I had started to look haggard, much older than I should do. I put it down to having had a few stressful years but then I started to notice my visible scalp more & more.

I decided that I would have to look into what could be done as, although I dont consider myself to be vain, I had begun to feel less attractive and feminine. I googled hair loss women and as The Hair Centre, in Victoria, looked very credible I looked through their information. I couldnt help feel sceptical as Ive not heard about any hair loss treatment that has been proven to work.

At the first consultation I met Gary who took pictures of my hair. With the digital pictures on screen I could see how stressed and thin my hair had become. I still felt sceptical that anything could be done to properly rectify my thinning hair but seeing the extent of the damage made it worth while to try, despite having to borrow the money.

I find the treatment very straight forward and easy to adapt into my daily washing routines. The condition if my hair improved very quickly and I could see and feel some grow back within the first three months. Gary was pleased by how responsive my hair had been to treatment and advised that by adding follicle builder to my treatment programme I should get a full recovery.

Ive been receiving this treatment for a total of seven months, with three months including the follicle builder, and my hair is dramatically fuller and healthier. Gary tells me that I am half way to a full recovery but Im already receiving regular compliments about my hair again. I feel much more confident about my appearance and Im looking forward to the next few months and getting even bigger hair!

The Hair Centre Blog Launched!

www.thewestminsterpractice.com

The Westminster Practice - Articles Aimed to Help, Inform and Educate.

Boil or furuncle is a skin disease caused by the inflammation of hair follicles, thus resulting in the localized accumulation of pus and dead tissues.

Individual boils can cluster together and form an interconnected network of boils called carbuncles.
Keep area clean. No peroxide because it breaks skin cells (good ones too, not just the infected area). After cleaning, put very thin layer of antibiotic ointment on area with clean fingertip and cover with a bandage. Do this once a day but if it doesn’t resolve the problem do it am and pm. Many people make the mistake of touching the boil a lot when hands aren’t clean or messing about with it which will introduce more bacteria to the boil. Warm moisture compress good too but a bandage for the rest of the time will speed healing. Usual healing time about 5 days

Eat foods that are rich in vitamin A and zinc, because these nutrients aid in skin healing and repair and can help relieve boils. Good sources of vitamin A include any fruit or vegetable that has a yellow or orange colorsquash, yams, sweet potatoes and carrots. Zinc is found in oysters, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Vitamin A is also found in dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale.

Avoiding sugar will help. Boils seems to happen when our diets consist of too much sugars in the diet.

Try putting warm moist compresses to help boils drain, which speeds healing. Gently soak the area with a warm, moist cloth several times each day. Please try never to squeeze a boil or attempt to lance it at home because this can spread the infection and make it worse.

Take a raw egg and crack it open. On the inside of the egg shell, there is a slippery lining. Peel the ling off and put on the boil. This will bring it to a head almost overnight.

Bread and milk poultice. Break bread into small pieces and moisten with milk and tie to area to draw out the infection. Bacon rind. Tie a piece of bacon rind over the boil or other infected area with the skin side of the rind on the outside. This will really draw out the infection.
From:http://print.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/treat-boils-at-your-home.html
